A loyalty program is only worth running if it changes behavior, and the only way to know is to watch a few numbers. The good news: you do not need a dashboard full of charts. Five or six metrics tell you almost everything about whether your program is working.
Here is what to track, how to read each one, and what to do when it moves.
1. Signups and signup rate
Your signup count is how many customers have added your card. On its own it only goes up, so the more useful version is your signup rate: of the customers who came in, how many actually joined.
A low signup rate usually means friction at the counter. If joining is quick and there is no app to download, the rate should be high. If it is low, look at how you are asking, and make sure your QR flyer is somewhere people can see it.
2. Repeat visit rate
This is the number the whole program exists to move: what share of your customers come back at least a second time. A first visit is chance. A second visit is the start of a habit.
If this rises after you launch, your program is doing its job. If it is flat, the reward may be too far away or too dull to chase, and your first goal probably needs to be easier to reach.
3. Reward redemption rate
Redemption rate is how many earned rewards actually get claimed. It sounds like a cost to watch, but it is really an engagement signal. Rewards that never get redeemed mean customers are not close enough to care.
A healthy redemption rate means people are reaching their goals and coming back to use them. A very low one usually means your reward is set too high.
4. Active vs lapsed members
Split your members into active, those who have visited recently, and lapsed, those who have gone quiet. This ratio is your early warning system.
A growing lapsed group is the first sign of trouble, well before your revenue shows it. It is also your best target for a win-back message, one of the ideas in how to get customers to come back.
5. Visit frequency
For a program aimed at habit, average visits per member over a period tells you whether regulars are becoming more regular. Even a small lift here, multiplied across your customer base, adds up to real revenue.
If frequency is not moving, look at whether you are giving people timed reasons to return, like a slow-day boost or a seasonal reward, rather than one static offer.
6. Revenue from members
Finally, the number that ties it together: how much of your revenue comes from loyalty members, and how their spend compares with non-members. Members who spend more and visit more are the whole point, and this is where you see the program pay for itself. Since a digital program costs so little to run, the bar it has to clear is low, as we cover in how much a loyalty program costs.
How to actually use these
You do not need to check these daily. A quick look each week or two is enough to spot a trend. The pattern is always the same:
- Pick the one metric that matters most for your goal, usually repeat visit rate.
- Watch its direction, not its exact value.
- When it moves, change one thing, then watch again.
Card Club puts these in front of you with a simple dashboard, metric cards with small trend lines, and drill-downs when you want the detail, so reading your program takes a minute, not an afternoon.
Common questions
What is the most important loyalty program metric? Repeat visit rate. Everything else supports it. A program that raises how often customers come back is working, whatever the other numbers say.
What is a good reward redemption rate? There is no single right number, but rewards should be reachable enough that a healthy share get claimed. If almost none are redeemed, your reward is set too high.
How often should I check my loyalty metrics? Every week or two is plenty for a small business. You are watching for trends, not daily noise.
How do I know if my loyalty program is worth the cost? Compare what members spend and how often they visit against non-members, then weigh that against what the program costs to run. For a low-cost digital program, the gap usually favors the program quickly.
